Dollar Store Decorating

WI members, Anne-Marie Potvin and Doreen Hardiman imparted some of their crafty dollar store decor ideas – presented below – at our January meeting, with the intention of providing activities to help pass our restrictive Covid times.

modge podge lights

Supplies needed:  Empty mason jar, modge podge, epsom salts, seasonal decorative items

Cover jar with modge (you can make your own modge podge by combining equal parts water and white glue). Roll jar in epsom salts. Let dry. Can be sprayed with a quick coat of clear verathane or something similar, but this step is not necessary. Give the jar a little rub to get the loose bits of salt off. Jar can be further decorated by running a line of glue over the top of the jar and dipping it in glitter. Decorate with seasonal décor, e.g., wrap top with hemp string and glue on greenery. Put a tea light or battery tea light inside.  Enjoy the emitted light. So pretty!

valentine lights

Supplies needed:  Empty mason jar, modge podge, heart shapes cut out from Valentine napkins, dollar store battery operated mini-lights, tape

Cover jar with modge podge. Press heart shapes (cut out from Valentine napkins) onto wet modge podge. Hearts should be attached around the jar leaving spaces for light to shine through. Let dry. Attach the battery pack of a strand of mini-lights to the lid of the jar. Turn lights on. Screw lid onto top of jar. Delight in your Valentine themed light!

wool toque garland

Supplies needed:  Pocket book, cardboard tube (paper towel, wrapping paper), wool, beads

Wrap wool around width of pocket book multiple times. Cut through the wool wrapping to get many strings of wool of same length. Cut ½ inch rings from paper towel or wrapping paper tubes. Fold one strand of wool in half and put the folded end through a cardboard ring so that a loop appears at the top of the ring. Pull the two cut ends of the wool strand through the loop to attach the wool strand to the ring. Repeat until ring is covered with wool. Push wool through the ring to form the hat brim. Tie the loose ends together with a piece of wool to form toque pom-pom. Make multiple hats and string together using beads to separate hats from one another.

twine and wreath form orbs

Supplies needed: Dollar Tree nautical rope (separated into strands), two packages of Dollar Tree three-ring wreath forms, hot glue gun

You will need three wreath forms which will make three different sized orbs (each pack at dollar tree contains two three-ring forms). Take three of the wreath forms apart to make nine individual circles, three small, three medium, and three large. Using the glue gun, glue one end of one strand of hemp string to one of the circles. Wrap the circle with the rope until the circle is covered with twine. Attach end with dab of hot glue. Repeat for all circles. Insert three of the same sized circles into one another to form the orb.

burlap hanger wreath

Supplies needed:  wire hanger, roll of burlap ribbon

Form a wire hanger into a circle. Weave burlap ribbon to form loops, going from top to bottom of ribbon strand. Continue until wreath has the desirable fullness. Wrap two ends of hanger together to form circular wreath. Decorate with seasonal decor and hang. If you wire your decor on, it can be changed out to match a specific theme, like seasons or holidays, e.g., Fall, Hallowe’en, Christmas, Spring, etc.
